WHAT IS AUTISM
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), also known as autism and/or Autistic Disorder, is a complex developmental condition which includes Asperger syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Rett syndrome, and Childhood Disintegrative Disorder. Individuals with autism exhibit impaired social interaction, communication and developmental challenges that may include repetitive behavior, interests that limit their ability to function at home, school, and in the community.
One in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism today and an estimated 1.5 million people in America live with ASD. Boys are four times more likely than girls to suffer from autism, with an estimated one out of 70 baby boys being born with some form of ASD in the U.S. alone.
New data has found an alarming increased risk of autism in children whose mother’s took certain antidepressants during their pregnancies. The study suggests that children are twice as likely to become autistic if their mothers took SSRI antidepressants while pregnant and approximately three times more likely to develop the condition if the drug was taken early in the pregnancy.
