AUTISM AND ANTIDEPRESSANTS:
Representing hundreds of children with autism

Researchers have discovered that mothers who took SSRI antidepressants during the first trimester of their pregnancy were found to have about a 3-fold increased risk of giving birth to a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children born to mothers who took the antidepressant during the second and third trimesters were found to have a 2-fold increased risk of ASD.

This new research has added to the growing controversy over the use of antidepressants in women of childbearing age. According to this autism study, popular SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), such as Celexa, Effexor, Lexapro, Prozac and Zoloft, have been linked to an increased risk of autism.

Two studies have found that women who take SSRIs at least double, and possibly triple or quadruple, the risk that their children will be autistic.

If you have given birth to a child with autism after taking antidepressants such as Celexa,  Lexapro or Prozac during your pregnancy, you may be entitled to compensation. Contact an experienced attorney at Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman for more information regarding your future claim and the future claim of your child.

Many studies link antidepressants to autism. Some of the more prominent studies were conducted by researchers from:

  • Johns Hopkins University

  • Harvard Medical School

  • Columbia University

  • New York University

  • Kaiser Permanente

  • The Rockefeller University Center for Neural Science

  • Department of Psychiatry, Neuropsychiatric Institute and Hospital, UCLA
